Transformer Protection Temperature Relay

All electrical devices, including transformers, emit waste heat during their operation as a natural by product.
The heat produced within transformers contributes to a temperature increase in their internal components. Typically, more efficient transformers exhibit lower temperature rises, while less efficient ones experience higher temperature rises.

Transformer temperature rise denotes the average temperature elevation of the windings above the surrounding ambient temperature when the transformer is operating at its specified nameplate rating.

Temperature plays a pivotal role in determining a transformer’s lifespan, with elevated temperatures being a primary factor leading to reduced longevity.
The predominant cause of most transformer failures is the breakdown of the insulation system. Any factor that negatively impacts the insulation, such as overloading, moisture, subpar oil or insulating paper quality, and extreme temperatures, can diminish the transformer’s life expectancy.

To safeguard transformers from excessive heat, temperature monitoring relays are employed. These relays use various sensors to measure the temperatures of solids, liquids, and gases in different applications.

They are instrumental in monitoring the temperatures of electric motors, control cabinets, busbars, and preventing transformers from overheating.

Protecting a transformer from heat involves employing temperature monitoring relays to trigger actions such as activating forced ventilation or the cooling circuit.
In response to temperature variations, these relays can also initiate alarm signals to reduce power or balance loads with other transformers. In extreme cases, the transformer may be tripped to prevent damage.

The primary method to mitigate transformer heating is by activating forced ventilation through fans. This facilitates the circulation of air between the transformer’s windings, effectively lowering its temperature. Additionally, the enclosure or room housing the transformer can be ventilated by opening doors or windows to allow fresh air in and expel hot air.
The most common approach is to install fans activated by a temperature controller, which monitors winding temperatures and adjusts fan operation based on predefined temperature settings. Multiple fans may be employed, disconnecting or connecting as needed to maintain optimal operating temperatures.
