Over time, the insulation resistance of power cables tends to deteriorate due to exposure to environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, moisture, and dust particles.
These elements impose electrical and mechanical stress on cables, underscoring the importance of conducting Meg Tests at regular intervals for both developing and existing sites to assess the health of their electrical systems.
The Insulation Test is a crucial method for evaluating the integrity of electrical insulation between core conductors and a ground reference. It helps identify issues such as voltage leakage, damage to the trace heater, and potential insulation faults. Neglecting to perform a Meg Test can lead to serious consequences, including circuit breaker tripping, electrical shocks, and even fires.
It is imperative that only adequately trained personnel administer the Meg Test.
Prior to measurement, ensure the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), adhere to safety guidelines, and de-energize the heating circuit.
Follow these steps for a successful test:
Example of Meg Test Procedure for case of a single cable:
– Safely strip the cable to expose the conductors.
– Connect the black test lead to the grounding braid and the red test lead to both bus wires.
– Perform the insulation resistance test for one minute.
– Record the test values.
– The cable is now ready for installation.
After installation, the acceptance test involves the following steps:
Acceptance Test Procedure:
– de-energize the heating circuit.
– Open the power termination kit cover and disconnect wires from the terminals.
– Connect the black test lead to the grounding braid and the red test lead to both bus wires.
– Perform the insulation resistance test for one minute, with a passing test requiring a minimum of 20 megohms for DC side and 100 megohms for AC side
– Record the test values.
– Re-connect wires into terminals and close the cover on the power termination kit.
