Monitoring Solar Array Temperature

Solar panels, the heart of any photovoltaic (PV) system, operate most efficiently within a specific temperature range. When panels get too hot, their efficiency decreases, potentially leading to reduced power output and a shorter lifespan. Conversely, extremely cold temperatures can also affect their performance negatively.

So, monitoring the temperature of solar arrays is a crucial aspect of optimizing the performance and longevity of solar power systems, and good preparing to measure the array temperature as following:

a) At a minimum, one module located centrally.
b) At least one module identified as one of the coolest due to its upstream positioning in the wind or its proximity to the ground, which benefits from the best cooling through convection.
c) At least one module identified as one of the hottest due to its downstream position in the wind, its top placement in the array when cooling is achieved through convection, or its location with limited circulation.

If the backs of the modules are not accessible, as is the case in certain roof-mounted systems, it is permissible to measure the temperature from the front of the module or utilize a validated model for module temperature.

The uncertainty linked to these measurement approaches should be assessed and included in the report.
